Devils Postpile, CA
About 80,000 to 100,000 years ago, a lava vent filled this valley with a lava lake up to 400 feet deep that cooled into columns standing 40 to 60 feet high — ranked among the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Devils Postpile National Monument was established in 1911 by presidential proclamation.
